Biography
Carl Pettersson
His father was a Volvo executive who was transferred internationally, so Carl lived in England from ages ten to fourteen and spent his last two high school years in Greensboro, North Carolina in the United States. He went on to attend North Carolina State University.
Pettersson turned professional in 2000. He won a European Tour card at that year's Qualifying School and played the European Tour in 2001 and 2002, winning the 2002 Algarve Open de Portugal. In late 2002 he won a place on the U.S. based PGA Tour at Qualifying School and he has played mainly in America since then. His first PGA Tour title was the 2005 Chrysler Championship, where he became the third Swede to win on the PGA Tour after Jesper Parnevik and Gabriel Hjertstedt. He has featured in the top fifty of the Official World Golf Rankings.
On June 4 2006, Pettersson won his second PGA Tour title - the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village. He finished at twelve under par, two strokes ahead of the field.
Became the third Swede to win on the US PGA Tour, after Jesper Parnevik and Gabriel Hjertstedt, when he won the 2005 Chrysler Championship and then finished runner-up the following week to finish 31st on the US PGA Tour Money List. Fulfilled the early promise he showed on The European Tour by winning the 2002 Algarve Open de Portugal after a play-off with David Gilford. Attended the US PGA Tour School at the end of the year and qualified in 21st place. An all-round athlete, took up golf seriously at the age of ten, having 'messed around' with the game as a toddler near the course where he lived in Gothenburg. Father, Lars, a low handicap golfer, was an Executive for Volvo Trucks Division, resulting in Carl living in England between the ages of ten and 14, then his current home of Raleigh, North Carolina. Won the European Amateur Individual Championship in 2000 and represented Sweden in the Eisenhower Trophy before turning professional in September of that year. Won four All-American titles while studying at North Carolina State University. At college, won an NCAA event by four shots - but was disqualified for signing for an incorrect score! Made a bright start to his European Tour career in 2001, finishing tied seventh in the Carlsberg Malaysian Open and outright second in the Open de Argentina but surpassed that with seven top ten finishes in addition to his victory at Vale do Lobo in 2002.
